Benefits of Planting Roses in Containers
Before we start the first thing you should know is that not all roses can or should be planted in containers. Whether or not a rose can be planted in a container is mostly dependent on the mature size of the rose. For roses compatible with containers, you'll want to look for something smaller than 5 feet. When planting a rose that is larger, make sure the pot you choose will give the rose plenty of room to grow. If you're looking for more information, on specifics for growing roses in containers, check out Heirloom Roses or David Austin Roses.
Ok, so you're thinking about growing your roses in containers and you want to know what some of the benefits are. Let's start with MOBILITY. Being able to move your plant around could be beneficial for several reasons.
1. This could allow you to make sure your rose is placed in optimal growing conditions. If you have a rose that needs full sun, you can move it throughout the year as the sun pattern changes.
2. Being able to move your plant around also means you can store it in a garage if you have harsh winters. (Please note that roses should not be brought indoors. Your house will be too warm for your rose to thrive.) The reason why some potted roses might need to be brought in during the winter is because the pot offers less protection from the elements. Depending on your location this could be a pro or a con for you.
3. Changing your design style or moving. By keeping your roses in containers you will be able to change the layout of your patio or garden. It would even allow you to take your roses with you if you were in the process of moving.
Next, let's talk about how growing roses in containers can be GREAT FOR SMALL SPACES. If you're currently living in an apartment but have a balcony, this option could be great for you. If you haven't already taken care of plants on your balcony make sure to pay attention to how much sun it gets during the day. You'll want to know how much sun you get before you order your roses. If you don't get a full day of sun then I'd recommend looking into shade loving roses. There are several beautiful options so don't be disappointed yet!
Now, if I haven't convinced you yet then maybe you'll need a more permanent option. Before, you go down that road though, let me give you one more reason why you might consider planting your roses in containers... PESTS. Living in the country or the midwest has made me aware that a ground hog can do serious damage to your yard. Keeping your roses out of the ground will protect them from these insistent animals.
